CSMIA records a significant surge in passenger traffic, ATMs, and global connectivity in FY 2023-24

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) marks yet another extraordinary milestone, welcoming over 52.8 Million passengers this FY 2023–24, showcasing a 16% rise in passenger traffic when compared to the last fiscal (43.9 million). The airport welcomed more than 26 million passengers on arrivals and 26.7 million passengers on departures. CSMIA accommodated 324,972 ATMs, recording a 12% year-on-year growth rate compared to FY 2022-23 (290,387 ATMs). Moreover, the total bags processed at CSMIA during FY2023-24 surpassed 40.7 million, marking a 31% upsurge compared to FY 2022-23 (31 million). With an uptick in both domestic and international passenger traffic, CSMIA stands to be a premier travel hub of efficiency and excellence in the aviation industry, further solidifying its leadership in the Indian aviation landscape.

The months of November and December 2023 especially proved to be extraordinary for CSMIA. On November 25th, the airport recorded its highest passenger traffic for the month, with 167,132 passengers passing through, comprising over 120,000 domestic passengers and more than 46,000 international passengers. Additionally, on November 11th, 2023, CSMIA achieved its highest-ever single-day Air Traffic Movements (ATMs) with a remarkable total of 1,032 ATMs. December 2023 saw CSMIA experience its highest monthly traffic ever, reaching an impressive 4.89 million passengers, marking a 13% increase compared to December 2022 (4.34 million). Furthermore, CSMIA demonstrated an astonishing 110% recovery in passenger traffic in CY 2023 compared to the pre-pandemic era.

FY 2023-24 noticed Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad retaining their positions as the top 5 domestic destinations for CSMIA, while Dubai, London, Abu Dhabi, Singapore, and Doha were the preferred top 5 international destinations. IndiGo, Air India and Vistara emerged as the top players in terms of market share among airlines for both international and domestic sectors.

CSMIA expanded its international connectivity adding destinations such as Almaty, Lagos, Jakarta, Entebbe, and Melbourne. Additionally, there were increased frequencies to destinations including Paris, Nairobi, Frankfurt, London, Doha, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City among others. London has seen a notable 55% increase in passenger traffic (~400k additional passengers), while Istanbul recorded a significant 68% surge, and Hong Kong experienced an extraordinary 258% growth in travel activity compared to last fiscal. CSMIA showcases its extensive global connectivity through passenger traffic to and from various continents. The Middle East leads with a robust 49% share, followed by Asia Pacific at 24%. Europe maintains a significant 18% share, while Africa and North America contribute 6% and 3%, respectively. These figures underscore CSMIA's pivotal role as a key international travel hub.

Key Initiatives taken by CSMIA in FY 2023-24 include:

  • CSMIA successfully completed its runway re-carpeting project for Runway 14/32, resulting in improved overall operational efficiency.
  • CSMIA recently expanded its Pre-Embarkation Security Check (PESC) facility at Terminal 2, to accommodate the growing demand for air travel. The project added eight new security lanes which included a new domestic to domestic (D2D) transfer facility.
  • CSMIA unveiled "Taxiway Z" as part of its efforts to reduce aircraft taxi time, thereby significantly decreasing carbon emissions. The introduction of Taxiway Z marked CSMIA as the first in the Asian region to offer a flexible-use apron.
  • CSMIA commissioned a specialized Disabled Aircraft Recovery Kit (DARK), establishing itself as the first airport in Asia equipped with this facility featuring High-Pressure lifting bags.
  • CSMIA expanded its domestic & global connectivity with 8% increase in weekly flight operations this Summer.
  • CSMIA commissioned a rooftop hybrid solar and vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) project in T2 taking the total solar installed capacity to 4.782 MW to support our goal to be operationally net zero in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2029.
  • CSMIA implemented a real time IoT based temperature monitoring system with an intuitive dashboard. This system will enable the maintenance team to control the HVAC system to maintain a comfortable temperature in the terminal buildings enhancing passenger comfort.
