PADI and ATOAI Join Forces to Elevate India as a Global Hub for Safe and Sustainable Diving Tourism
In a landmark move for India’s adventure tourism industry, the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) has partnered with the Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) to promote safe, sustainable, and globally recognized scuba diving practices across the country. The collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aims to enhance diver safety, establish uniform training standards, and highlight India’s potential as a world-class diving destination.
PADI, the world’s leading diver training organization with nearly six decades of global expertise, brings its internationally acclaimed education framework to this initiative. ATOAI, India’s apex body representing adventure tour operators, will leverage its extensive industry network and local expertise to strengthen standards and promote responsible tourism practices nationwide.
“Our partnership with ATOAI reflects PADI’s commitment to advancing sustainable adventure tourism and diving in India,” said Thomas Knedlik, Vice President, PADI Asia Pacific. “By aligning with global safety and training standards, we hope to inspire more people to experience and protect India’s extraordinary underwater heritage. This collaboration will also support the development of ISO-aligned national standards for scuba diving in India.”
The MoU emphasizes improving diver education, operator training, and adherence to international safety protocols. PADI and ATOAI will work together to conduct awareness campaigns, organize joint participation at global tourism events, and promote India as a secure and eco-conscious diving destination. Both organizations also plan to support marine conservation efforts through initiatives such as beach and underwater clean-up drives.
Ajeet Bajaj, President, ATOAI, added, “This partnership marks a milestone in India’s pursuit of Responsible Adventure Tourism. Combining ATOAI’s deep understanding of India’s adventure terrain with PADI’s global diving expertise will help set new standards in safety, quality, and sustainability. Together, we aim to create a robust framework that not only attracts global travelers but also safeguards our marine ecosystems.”
The PADI–ATOAI alliance is set to enhance the visibility of India’s diving destinations, generate local employment, and contribute significantly to the sustainable growth of the country’s adventure tourism economy.
